Furthermore, the clan name of the Śākyas encompasses both religious and secular conditions. As for the secular, they still hold royal rank, such as the rulers of Udyāna in northern India. As for the religious, it extends across the great chiliocosm and reaches far into sixty thousand [years]; like a continuous creeping vine, it is interwoven and abides together with the Dharma. Thus, though the teaching was introduced to the Eastern land and suffered three suppressions, even if it is said to have been extinguished here, it still persisted in other countries. Moreover, the sixteen great sages and hundreds of millions of those beyond study (aśaikṣa) secretly propagate and protect it, quickly reviving it. This being so, its extinction cannot truly be extinction, which is hardly of human design; its propagation can truly be propagated, as it genuinely returns to the power of the sages. One should simply rely on and follow the established teachings and contemplative practices, subduing erroneous delusions and expelling karmic defilements. If one labors unceasingly, the addition of the final basket of earth may be anticipated; but if one turns away from this and drifts along, it will end in vain. Therefore, at the conclusion of this genealogy, I provide this warning and preface.
