The sūtra says: He then proceeded to the five men in Vārāṇasī. Seeing the Buddha approaching from afar, they thought he had not attained the Way, and agreed among themselves not to rise in respect. But once the Buddha arrived, they unconsciously stood up and bowed, performing attendant duties for him. Having broken their original pact, they felt deeply ashamed. Taking their past doubts and challenges, the Buddha explained them fully, preaching the transmigration of the five aggregates and all the sufferings of the three realms of existence. Kauṇḍinya was the first to understand the Four Truths and give birth to the Dharma-eye; eighty thousand nayutas of space-dwelling devas also attained the purity of the Dharma-eye.
