At the end of Emperor Wu's reign, Dharmarakṣa lived in seclusion in deep mountains. In the mountains there was a clear brook, where he always went to bathe and rinse his mouth; later, firewood gatherers defiled the water's edge, and in an instant it ran dry. Dharmarakṣa paced about and lamented, saying: 'The lack of virtue in humanity has caused this clear spring to cease flowing. If the water should be forever exhausted, I truly have no means to support myself, and ought simply to move away.' When he had finished speaking, the spring welled up and filled the brook; such was the response elicited by his profound sincerity. Thus Zhi Dun's eulogy for his portrait says: 'Master Dharmarakṣa was clear and still, / his virtue profound and fine; / softly chanting in the remote valley, / a dry spring rinsed his lips. / How lofty was Master Dharmarakṣa, / endowed by Heaven with vast excellence; / washing his feet in the Flowing Sands, / he grasped and brought forth the dark principle.' Later he established a temple outside the Qingmen Gate of Chang'an, diligently practicing the Way. Thereupon his virtuous transformation spread afar and his renown covered the four horizons; the several thousands of monks and disciples all looked up to and served him.
