Fu, styled Shiwei, was a man of Nanyang, a descendant of Zhang Heng. Though gifted with talent and understanding, he was cruel and unreasonable, having arbitrarily slain the Grand Administrator of Tianshui, Feng Shang; the people were suspicious and terrified, and in the confusion he was beheaded. Guan Fan also ultimately perished through his own deceit and treacherous nature. Shortly thereafter, there was a man named Li Tong, who died and revived, saying: 'I saw the Dharma Master Bo Yuan in King Yama's presence, expounding the Śūraṅgama-sūtra for the king, and he said: "When the discourse is finished, he shall proceed to the Trāyastriṃśa Heaven." I also saw the Libationer Wang Fu—another source says the Daoist priest Master Ji—fettered in chains, seeking Bo Yuan to make confession.' Formerly, in ordinary times, Bo Yuan had often disputed truth and falsehood with Fu; Fu was repeatedly bested, and in his uncontrollable wrath he composed the Laozi huahu jing (Scripture on Laozi Converting the Barbarians) to slander the Buddhadharma. When the retribution came due, only after death did he think of repentance. Sun Chuo's Daoxian lun matched Fazu to Ji Kang, stating: 'Bo Yuan's disaster arose from Guan Fan, while the disaster of the Master of the Center was wrought by Zhong Hui; both worthies, with their brilliant and transcendent spirits, neglected the preservation of their persons. Lodging their minds beyond mundane matters, they held the world lightly and brought calamity upon themselves; they were scarcely different.' Such was the praise he received.
