竺法蘭，亦中天竺人，自言誦經論數萬章，為天竺學者之師。時蔡愔既至彼國，蘭與摩騰共契遊化，遂相隨而來。會彼學徒留礙，蘭乃間行而至。既達雒陽，與騰同止，少時便善漢言。

Zhu Dharmarakṣa was also a native of Madhyadeśa. He stated of himself that he had memorized tens of thousands of passages from sūtras and treatises, and was a teacher to scholars in Tianzhu. When Cai Yin had arrived in that country, Dharmarakṣa joined Śeṣamātaṅga in agreeing to travel and convert, and so accompanied him. Encountering hindrance from his disciples there, who tried to detain him, Dharmarakṣa arrived by taking a secret route. Having reached Luoyang, he stayed together with Mātaṅga, and in a short while became proficient in the Han language.
