Dharmayaśas had a disciple named Fadu who was skilled in both Sanskrit and Chinese and often served as his interpreter. Fadu was originally the son of the Indian Zhu Bole. Bole had long stayed in Guangzhou, coming and going to seek trade; halfway along his journey, in Nankang, he fathered a son whom he accordingly named Nankang; when grown, he was named Jinjia, and upon entering the Way he was named Fadu. Fadu was initially Dharmayaśas's disciple and received the sūtras and teachings from him. After Dharmayaśas returned abroad, Fadu clung alone to eccentric novelties, intending to draw followers to himself. He claimed that one should study exclusively the Hīnayāna and forbade reading the Mahāyāna scriptures; he held that one should bow only to Śākyamuni and that there are no buddhas of the ten directions; he used a bronze bowl for eating and allowed no other vessels. Furthermore, he ordered the nuns to walk holding one another's hands, and on days of repentance they merely lay prostrate facing each other. Only Nun Fahong, the daughter of Yan Yuan, the former prefect of Danyang under the Song, and Nun Puming, the daughter of Zhang Mu, the inspector of Jiaozhou, initially received his doctrine. Today, the nuns of the Xuanye and Hongguang temples in the capital follow his lingering customs, and the assemblies of nuns in the eastern lands also transmit his teachings from time to time.
