The man of the Way regularly slept in the magistrate's hall, placing the box and staff at the head of the bed. The magistrate ordered a night watchman to steal it in the night, wishing to see it. The man of the Way already knew this; at dusk he would hang the box and staff high up and sleep right beneath them, so they could never be reached. Later, taking his leave of the magistrate, he said, "I wished to stay a little while, but you always want to steal from people, so I will simply leave." The magistrate called the boy from before and asked what he had experienced recently. The boy said that the man of the Way had had him hold the staff and drifted off through the air, only hearing the sound of waves beneath his feet. He also related that the letter sent by the person in the mountains was still in his belt. The magistrate opened it to read, but could understand nothing of it. He copied it and resealed the original. He ordered someone to take the boy to Baitu Dike and deliver it to Shi Zong. Shi Zong opened the letter in great astonishment, saying, "Where did you get a letter from the men of the Way on Penglai?" Later, Shi Zong traveled south to Wu and Kuaiji. Once, passing a fishing weir, he saw fishermen catching fish in great numbers; Shi Zong bathed upstream, and all the fish scattered. His covert rescue of living creatures was like this.
