Later he rested at the Great Temple of Longshan in Shangyu. He was skilled in discussing the Zhuangzi and Laozi and had thoroughly mastered the Analects and Classic of Filial Piety, yet he concealed his brilliance and hid his tracks, so the world knew nothing of him. Xie Shao, Wei Maizhi, Fangzhi, and others of Kuaiji, all profound scholars of deep learning, took him as their teacher. Later, monks lodging with him heard Shi Zong speaking with someone at night, recounting matters of Penglai at some length; by dawn, no one knew where Shi Zong had gone. In Tao Yuanming's Record of Meeting Three Extraordinary Dharma Masters at Baitu Dike, he was one of them. Some say that a merchant traveling by sea saw a śramaṇa on an isolated isle, who asked him to deliver a letter to Shi Zong. He placed the letter in the boat; when his companions tried to read it, the letter adhered to the boat and would not come free. When they reached Baitu Dike, the letter flew up and went to Shi Zong, who caught it and carried it away.
