Beidu's name is unknown. He often crossed water riding a wooden cup, hence his name ("Cup Crosser"). He was first seen in Jizhou. He did not cultivate minor rules of conduct, but his divine powers were preeminent; the world could not fathom his origins. Once, lodging at a family home in the north, there was a golden image in the house, which Beidu stole and carried off. The master of the house noticed and gave chase; seeing Beidu walking slowly, he galloped on horseback after him, but could not catch him. Reaching Mengjin River, Beidu floated his wooden cup on the water and crossed the river on it, without need of wind or oars, light and swift as if flying. Soon he crossed to the other bank and reached the capital. When seen at that time, he appeared to be around forty years old, girt with a rope and dressed in rags that barely covered his body. His speech came and went unpredictably, and his joy and anger were uneven. Sometimes he would break the thick ice in severe freezing cold to bathe, or go up onto his bed wearing clogs, or enter the market walking barefoot. He carried only a single reed basket, with nothing else.
