Liu Xingbo of the state of Pei, inspector of Yanzhou, sent an envoy to invite him. He came carrying his basket. Xingbo ordered people to lift it and inspect it, but more than ten men could not raise it. Xingbo looked for himself, and saw only a tattered patched cassock and a wooden cup. Later he returned to the Li family for another thirty-odd days. One early morning, he suddenly said, "I want a kāṣāya; have it ready by midday." Master Li immediately made arrangements, but by midday it was not yet finished. Beidu said he was going out for a short while, and did not return by nightfall. The entire region smelled an extraordinary fragrance and suspected something miraculous. Searching for Beidu everywhere, they found him under the northern crags, lying dead upon a tattered kāṣāya spread on the ground. In front of his head and behind his feet, lotuses grew. The flowers were extremely fresh and fragrant, but withered in a single night. The townsfolk buried him together. Several days later, someone coming from the north said he had seen Beidu carrying his reed basket, traveling toward Pengcheng. They opened the coffin together, and saw only boots and sandals.
