Haluojie was originally a man from Fanyang. He left household life at an early age and recited two million words of sūtras. By nature he was empty and profound; he maintained the monastic precepts, was skilled in deportment, and had a handsome appearance. He practiced the dhūta austerities extensively, sleeping alone in mountains and wilderness. In the ninth year of the Taikang era of Emperor Wu of the Jin, he came briefly to Luoyang. At that time an epidemic was raging, and the dead followed one after another. Jie treated them with incantations, curing eight or nine out of ten. In the first year of the Yuankang era of Emperor Hui of the Jin, he went west and stayed in a stone cave on Mount Louzhi to practice dhyāna. Because this cave was far from water, people of the time wished to dig a gully for him. Jie said: "There is no need to trouble yourselves." He then rose, kicked the western stone wall of the cave with his left foot, and his toes sank into the wall. When he withdrew his foot, water gushed from it—pure, fragrant, soft, and sweet—flowing ceaselessly through the four seasons. Those who came to drink it all had their hunger and thirst quenched and their diseases cured.
