Shi Fakui was originally surnamed Ruan and was a native of Yuqian in Wuxing. In his youth he renounced the household and became a disciple of Fakai of Zhiyuan Temple in the capital. Kai had long possessed scholarly merit and was particularly well-versed in the classics and histories; Wang Huan and Wang Su of Langya both studied under him. By nature Kui was reverent and silent, spoke little, maintained himself with simplicity, and did not meddle in worldly affairs. He chanted one copy of the Lotus Sūtra. In the temple was the elder Dharma Master Cansheng, aged and ailing; Kui took him as his mentor and took utmost care of him. When Sheng died, he carried out the funeral and burial according to the Dharma. Whenever he received payments at vegetarian feasts, he gathered them to make a sandalwood image. When the image was completed, he hosted a great assembly himself.
