His original family lived as migrants by the capital's Grand Market. That morning he returned home, then went to Dinglin, and returned again to Zhiyuan. Later, when the three places were checked, all had seen Kui come for the midday meal; truly he had attended the three places at the very same time. That evening he returned to his room to lie down, and died suddenly. His corpse was very fragrant and soft, with two fingers bent on his hand. The assembly all realized that he had attained the second fruit. At that time he was still a novice, yet his spiritual traces were so extraordinary that news reached Emperor Wu. The Emperor came in person, holding a feast for the assembled monks. Prince Wenhui and Prince Wenxuan both went to his room to make prostrations, and arranged the burial and encoffining. The common folk flocked like clouds, offering dāna in heaps. They then used the offerings obtained to erect a pagoda at Zhiyuan Temple. This year was the seventh year of the Yongming reign of the Qi (489 CE).
