Zhi was renowned and manifested wonders for more than forty years, and the men and women who reverently served him were beyond count. In the winter of the thirteenth year of Tianjian, he said to someone in the rear hall of the palace: 'The bodhisattva is about to depart.' Before ten days had passed, he died without illness. His corpse was fragrant and pliable, and his countenance cheerful and delighted. Facing death, he lit a candle and handed it to the attendant of the rear chamber Wu Qing. Qing immediately reported it. The Emperor sighed: 'The Great Master will not remain any longer! As for the candle, does he entrust future affairs to me?' He therefore provided a lavish funeral and buried him on the Dulong mound of Mount Zhong. A Kaishan Cloister was further established at the tomb site. Lu Chui was ordered by imperial decree to compose an inscription inside the tomb, and Wang Yun carved an epitaph at the temple gate. His portrait was transmitted and preserved in many places.
