On Mount Chicheng there was a solitary crag standing alone, towering high into the clouds. Tanyou carved stones to make a ladder, climbed the crag to sit in contemplation, and joined bamboo pipes to bring water for his daily use. More than ten students of dhyāna came to study under him. Wang Xizhi heard of this and went intentionally to visit him; looking up at the peak, he bowed with hands clasped, paid his respects, and returned. The crag of Chicheng connects with the waterfalls of Tiantai, Lingxi, and Siming. Tiantai has sheer overhanging precipices with peaks that touch the sky. An ancient tradition says that on top there is a fine monastery inhabited by those who have attained the Way. Although there is a stone bridge spanning a ravine, a horizontal rock blocks human passage, and the moss is green and slippery, so that since antiquity, no one had been able to reach it. When Tanyou walked to the bridge, he heard a voice in the air say: "I know your sincerity, but today you may not cross. Come back in ten years, and you will naturally be able to." Tanyou felt downcast, and stayed overnight at the spot, where he heard the sounds of circumambulation and the chanting of 'bodhisattva'. At dawn, when he was about to proceed again, he saw a man whose beard and eyebrows were snow-white, who asked Tanyou where he was going. Tanyou told him his intention in full. The old gentleman said: "You possess a mortal body of birth and death; how could you go there? I am the mountain spirit, and therefore tell you this." Tanyou then turned back. On the way, he passed a stone chamber and rested inside. Suddenly, clouds and fog closed in darkly, and the entire chamber resounded with noises. Tanyou's expression remained undisturbed. The next morning, he saw a man wearing an unlined lined-robe approach, who said: "This is my dwelling. Yesterday I was away from home, which resulted in the disturbance; I am deeply ashamed." Tanyou said: "If this is your room, please take it back." The spirit said: "My family has already moved; please remain and dwell here." Tanyou stayed there for a short while.
