Shi Sengyin, surnamed Li, was a native of Longxi in Qinzhou. His family had upheld the right faith for generations. Yin went forth from the household at the age of eight and was immediately able to observe permanent fasting. By the age of twelve, he ate only vegetarian food. When he received the full precepts, his maintenance of discipline became even firmer. He constantly occupied his mind in the garden of the Vinaya, attained a wondrous comprehension of the Daśabhāṇavāra-vinaya, and recited the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka-sūtra and the Vimalakīrtinirdeśa-sūtra. Hearing that Master Xuan’gao of West Liangzhou was eminent in both dhyāna and wisdom, he took up his book-box and followed him. Thereupon he fully mastered the methods of dhyāna and deeply understood the essentials of the Vinaya. After the venerable Gao passed away, he traveled west to Ba and Shu, devoting himself to propagation. Soon after, he traveled east and resided at Pipa Temple in Jiangling, inquiring about doctrine under Huiche. Che's renown was heavy at that time, his teaching stirring beyond the ordinary world. Yin inquired and studied for a short time and thoroughly investigated the sūtras and Vinaya; the wind of his dhyāna and wisdom covered the Jing and Chu regions. Liu Xiuyou, Prince of Shanyang and regional governor, and Zhang Dai, his aide-de-camp, both consulted him and received the precept methods. Later, the inspectors Liu Xiuruo, Prince of Baling, and Liu Jingsu, Prince of Jianping, both halted their carriages at his dhyāna chamber, bent their knees, and paid respectful homage.
