Shi Daoying's background is unknown. Initially he resided at Lingyao Temple practicing dhyāna; later he relied on the two Vinaya masters Guan and Xun to receive instruction in the Vinaya. He was particularly proficient in the Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya, recited the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka-sūtra and the Suvarṇaprabhāsa-sūtra, and strictly maintained a vegetarian diet. Daohui of Zhuangyan Temple and Zhixiu of Zhicheng Temple both modeled their precept conduct on him. Zhang Yong invited him to return to Wu Commandery, and Cai Xingzong also invited him to stay in Shangyu. Later, Yong established Xianxin Temple in the Louhu Garden in the capital and again invited him to return and reside there. His lecture sessions were frequent, and his disciples were very numerous. He died in the second year of Shengming at the age of eighty-three.
