He constantly prayed with his whole heart for rebirth in Sukhāvatī. Whenever he recited the Sūtra of Immeasurable Life and the Contemplation Sūtra, he would see a śramaṇa of very handsome and majestic form who was constantly before him. In the second year of the Jianwu era of the Qi (495 CE), when bedridden with an illness that did not heal, he focused his thoughts on the Western Region and bowed in repentance without ceasing. He saw all the worthy ones and sages assembled before his eyes. He then related what he saw to his disciples and ordered them to cremate his body after death. Having spoken, he clasped his palms together and died. They piled firewood at the road intersection in Xinfan to burn the corpse; the smoke and flames reached to heaven, dying out only after three days. Gathering the remaining bones, they erected a stūpa on that very spot.
