Shi Zhicheng's surname was Pei, and his ancestors were from Wenxi in Hedong. He was a descendant of Pei Hui, the Inspector of Ji Province under the Wei. His grandfather's generation had fled turmoil and taken up residence in Jingkou. In his youth, Cheng was magnanimous and impassioned, and rather fond of archery and horsemanship. At the age of seventeen, he accompanied Wang Xuanmo and Shen Tan in their northern expedition against the Xianyun. Whenever arms clashed and blades drew blood, he never failed to feel distress in his heart, feeling the pain deeply within himself. Thereupon, sighing, he said, "Harming others to save oneself is not the ambition of a benevolent man." When affairs were settled, he set aside his armor. By chance, reading the Sūtra of Auspicious Responses (Ruiying jing), he had a profound awakening. Knowing that a hundred years of life cannot be counted on, and that worldly kingdoms are not of supreme weight, he went to master Zong of the Dhyāna Quarters in Nanjian and requested to receive the five precepts. During the reign of Emperor Xiaowu of Song, Dhyāna Master Yang of Yizhou was invited down to the capital to receive offerings; Cheng then came with the intention of taking refuge, and Yang also received him cordially. When Yang returned to the Min River, Cheng accompanied him on his travel upstream and renounced worldly life at Pei Temple in Shu, with Yang as his master, at the age of thirty-six. He then concentrated exclusively on the vinaya-piṭaka, gaining great clarity on the Daśādhyāya-vinaya (Ten Recitations Vinaya), and also recited the Aṣṭasāhasrikā-prajñāpāramitā in one fascicle.
