Later, he travelled east down to Jiangling, where he received further instruction in dhyāna and vinaya under the two masters Yin and Ju. Encountering the turmoil stirred up by Yijia, he moved to reside in the capital, where he met master Ying lecturing on the vinaya at Xinghuang Temple. Cheng posed questions regarding obscure and abstruse points, and his remarks struck right to the core, so that all on that occasion were astonished and sighed in admiration. Faxian of Dinglin Temple met him at the lecture assembly, and hearing how clear and profound their exchanges were, brought him along to stay at his mountain temple. Thereupon he reviewed and recited the Aṣṭasāhasrikā-prajñāpāramitā, and studied and constructed the meaning of the vinaya. Later, the śramaṇa Sengzhi of Bao'an Temple in Yuhang invited Cheng to return to his hometown to begin lecturing on the Daśādhyāya-vinaya. Yunqi Temple again pressed him to serve as the temple abbot, and Cheng accepted the appointment. In a short time, he raised its main guidelines and demonstrated the monastic regulations. Soon after, he returned to the capital, and Prince Wenxuan invited him to lecture on the vinaya at Puhong Temple; several hundred monks held their texts and received his instructions.
