Shi Huiwei was of unknown origin. He stayed at the Great Monastery in Chang'an. His monastic discipline was pure and pristine; he mostly dwelt in mountain valleys, cultivating the practice of dhyāna. A headless ghost came to him, but Huiwei's expression did not change; he simply said to the ghost: "Since you have no head, you have no trouble with headaches—how pleasant that is!" The ghost then vanished, and returned as a belly-less ghost that had only hands and feet. Huiwei said again: "Since you have no belly, you have no worry about the five internal organs—how delightful that is!" In a moment, it changed into other strange shapes again, but Huiwei dismissed them all with words corresponding to their forms.
