Shi Xuangao, whose secular surname was Wei and whose original personal name was Lingyu, was a native of Wannian in Fengyi. His mother, née Kou, originally believed in non-Buddhist teachings. When she was first married into the Wei family, she first became pregnant with a daughter, who was Xuangao's elder sister. Born with faith in the Buddha, she prayed for her mother, wishing that their household would hold no divergent views and would be able to venerate the Great Dharma. In the third year of the Hongshi reign of the illegitimate Qin, the mother dreamed of an Indian monk scattering flowers that filled the room, and upon waking found herself pregnant; on the eighth day of the second month in the fourth year, she gave birth to a boy. An extraordinary fragrance suddenly arose in the house, and a brilliant light illuminated the walls, subsiding only at dawn. Because of these auspicious omens at her son's birth, the mother named him Lingyu. People of the time respected him and also called him Shigao.
