When Xuangao first reached the mountain, he wished to receive pravrajyā. The mountain monks did not permit it, saying: "Without parental consent, the Dharma does not allow ordination." Xuangao therefore returned home temporarily and petitioned for permission to enter the Way. After two decades of days had passed, he finally accomplished his former aspiration. Having turned his back on secular ways and departed from the world, he changed his name to Xuangao. Naturally intelligent with innate knowledge, his learning required no labored thought. By the age of fifteen, he was already preaching the Dharma to the mountain monks. After receiving full ordination, he devoted himself exclusively to dhyāna and the Vinaya. Hearing that the Dhyāna Master Buddhabhadra was propagating the Dharma at Shiyang Temple in the Guanzhong region, Xuangao went to study under him. Within ten days, he attained a profound mastery of the methods of dhyāna. Buddhabhadra praised him, saying: "Excellent, son of the Buddha, that you are able to attain such deep awakening!" Thereupon, humbling himself with modesty, he would not accept the etiquette due to a teacher.
