Formerly, Master Tan Hong of Chang'an had wandered to Min and Shu, and his teaching flourished in Chengdu. Relying on his high reputation, the King of Henan sent an envoy to welcome him. When Hong heard that [Xuan]gao had been banished, he vowed to vindicate his innocence, and paying no heed to the perils of the plank roads, he braved the dangers to comply with the summons. Arriving in Henan, after the host and guest rituals were concluded, he said to the king, "Since you have profound insight and far-reaching discernment, why did you believe slander and cast aside a worthy? The reason this poor monk did not consider several thousand li too far was precisely to present this one truth." The king and the crown prince felt ashamed and remorseful, and immediately sent an envoy to Gao to offer humble apologies and invite Gao back to the capital. Gao, whose mind was set on universal salvation, forgot his resentment and answered the summons. Just as he was about to leave the mountains, the trees and grasses in the mountains broke and collapsed, and falling boulders blocked the road. Gao made a praṇidhāna, saying, "I have vowed to propagate the Dharma; how could I remain confined to one place?" Thereupon the wind ceased, the road opened, and he gradually returned to the kingdom. The king, his ministers, and the common people waited along the nearby road to welcome him. Both inside and outside the court, all reverently served him and honored him as the State Preceptor.
