11.35

當爾之夕，門人莫知。是夜三更，忽見光繞高先所住處塔三匝，還入禪窟中。因聞光中有聲云：「吾已逝矣。」諸弟子方知已化，哀號痛絕。既而迎屍於城南曠野，沐浴遷殯。兼營理崇公，別在異處。一都道俗，無不嗟駭。

On the evening of that day, his disciples knew nothing. At the third watch of the night, light was suddenly seen circling three times around the stūpa where Gao had formerly dwelt, and returning into his meditation cave. Then from within the light a voice was heard, saying, "I have already departed." Only then did the disciples know that he had passed away, and they wailed in overwhelming grief. Thereafter, they received the corpse in the open wilds south of the city, bathed it, and held the funeral. They also arranged the affairs for Lord Chong separately in another place. In the whole capital, among both clergy and laity, there was no one who did not lament in shock.
