His disciple Xuan Chang was at that time in Yunzhong, six hundred li from the Wei capital. At dawn he suddenly saw a person who told him of the disaster and gave him a horse capable of traveling six hundred li [in a day]. He then spurred the horse and rode back, arriving at the capital in the evening. Seeing that his master had already died, he was heartbroken with grief. Weeping together with his fellow students, he said, "Now that the Dharma is destroyed, will it ever rise again? If it is destined to rise again, we pray that the Upādhyāya sit up. The Upādhyāya's virtue is not that of an ordinary man; he will surely illuminate this for us." When he finished speaking, Gao's two eyes gradually opened, and his complexion regained its joyful radiance. Sweat poured forth all over his body, and the sweat was extremely fragrant. In a short while he sat up and said to his disciples, "The Great Dharma manifests in response to conditions, waxing and waning in accordance with circumstances. Waxing and waning belong to external traces; the underlying Principle is ever tranquil. I only lament that you will soon be as I am, and only Xuan Chang will manage to cross to the south. After you have died, the Dharma will surely rise again. Cultivate your minds well, and do not harbour regret along the way." Having spoken, he lay down and expired. The next day, when they moved the coffin and wished to cremate him, the state laws did not permit it, so they prepared a grave and buried him. Clergy and laity mourned in sorrow, weeping until their gaze was exhausted.
