Shi Puheng, whose secular surname was Guo, was a native of Chengdu in the commandery of Shu. When he was a child, he often saw a holy monk expounding the Dharma in the sky amidst the sunlight; when he spoke of it to his family, none of them believed him. Later he earnestly sought pravrajyā, residing at Anle Temple in the seat of government. He dwelt alone in a single room, keeping no retainers or disciples, practicing dhyāna for tranquil attainment, and was skilled in entering, emerging from, and abiding in samādhi. He was of like mind with Vinaya Master Tao of Shu. He himself spoke of entering the fire-light samādhi, where light descended straight from between his eyebrows down to the vajra limit; within the light he saw all forms and images, and his past lives' karmic retributions were quite clear to him. He died in the third year of the Shengming reign era of the Song, at the age of seventy-eight.
