Some days before his death, he suddenly bade farewell to his relatives and acquaintances, showing no sign of sorrow at all, so that people at the time thought it was in jest. On the day he was about to pass away, he showed slight signs of illness; only a secular slave attended to him, and the next morning he died sitting upright. The slave, not understanding, tried to force him to lie down, but the corpse would not stretch out at all. When the assembly of monks came to see him, they placed him in a sitting posture. Three fingers of his hand were curled, while the others were extended. The monks tried to stroke and straighten them, and they straightened along with the hand, but once straightened, they curled again.
