Shi Huiming, whose secular surname was Kang, was a native of Kangju (Sogdia). His ancestors had fled to Eastern Wu to escape turmoil. Ming took pravrajyā in his youth and resided at Dong Temple in Zhang'an. During the Jianyuan reign era of the Qi, he climbed the stone chambers of Mount Chicheng together with fellow śramaṇas; seeing that the skeletal remains of Venerable You were undecayed, while the dhyāna chambers were overgrown and neglected with no one carrying on his noble traces, he hired laborers to clear the paths, rebuilt halls and chambers, and crafted a reclining Buddha along with an image of Venerable You. Thereupon he settled his mind in dhyāna and recitation, dedicating his life to ascetic practice. Later, while in samādhi, he saw a goddess who called herself Old Mother Lü, saying that she constantly protected him. At times, white apes, white deer, white snakes, and white tigers would frolic before the steps, tame and docile, rolling about without causing fear to anyone.
