11.79

自遺教東移，禪道亦授。先是世高、法護譯出禪經，僧光、曇猷等，並依教修心，終成勝業。故能內踰喜樂，外折妖祥。擯鬼魅於重巖，覩神僧於絕石。及沙門智嚴躬履西域，請罽賓禪師佛馱跋陀更傳業東土。玄高、玄紹等亦並親受儀則。出入盡於數隨，往返窮乎還淨。其後僧周、淨度、法期、慧明等，亦雁行其次。

Since the bequeathed teachings moved east, the path of dhyāna has also been transmitted. Previously, An Shigao and Dharmarakṣa translated dhyāna sūtras, and Sengguang, Tanyou, and others cultivated their minds according to the teachings, ultimately achieving supreme attainments. Thus they were able to surpass joy and bliss internally, and dispel portents and phantoms externally. They banished demons and spirits to jagged crags, and beheld divine monks upon sheer precipices. When the śramaṇa Zhiyan personally traveled to the Western Regions, he invited the dhyāna master from Jibin, Buddhabhadra, to transmit the heritage further to the eastern lands. Xuan’gao, Xuanshao, and others also received the rites and regulations in person. Inhalation and exhalation were fully mastered through counting and following; going and returning were thoroughly perfected in returning and purifying. Thereafter, Sengzhou, Jingdu, Faqi, Huiming, and others followed in succession like wild geese in flight.
