Yet when the application of dhyāna becomes manifest, it pertains to spiritual penetrations. Thus, it can cause the three thousand[-fold world system] to abide within a single pore, and the four seas to curdle into ghee; one can pass through stone walls without hindrance, and lift the great multitude without dropping anyone. Even with the drifting ways of the world and mediocre immortal arts, one can still halt waves, stop rain, or chant mantras to ignite fires that incinerate kingdoms. If then Xuan’gao died and arose again, or Daofa sat and passed away, how could that be considered strange? If one is like Udraka-Rāmaputra, who was ultimately harassed by birds and beasts, or the Single-Horned Immortal, who was in the end corrupted by Śāntā, it is all because although their mental path was restrained, it was still conjoined with craving and views. Compared to a firefly's torch set against the sun and moon, could they ever be equals?
