12.12

時村中有劫，劫得一小兒，欲取心肝以解神。富逍遙路口，遇見劫，具問其意，因脫衣以易小兒，群劫不許。富曰：「大人五藏亦可用不？」劫謂富不能亡身，妄言亦好。富迺念曰：「我幻炎之軀，會有一死，以死濟人，雖死猶生。」即自取劫刀劃胸至臍，群劫更相咎責，四散奔走，即送小兒還家。

At that time there were bandits in the village who captured a small child, intending to take out his heart and liver to offer as a sacrifice to the spirits. Sengfu was strolling at the crossroads when he encountered the bandits. Inquiring into their intent, he took off his clothes to exchange them for the small child, but the bandits refused. Sengfu said, 'Can an adult's five internal organs also be used?' Thinking Sengfu could not sacrifice his own life, the bandits replied that empty talk was cheap. Sengfu then thought to himself, 'This phantom, illusory body of mine must one day die; if by dying I can save another, though dead I shall yet live.' He immediately took a bandit's knife and slashed his chest down to his navel. The bandits blamed one another and fled in all directions, and the child was sent back home.
