Shi Fazhuang, whose lay surname was Shen, was a native of Huainan. He left household life at the age of ten, becoming a disciple of Huiyuan of Mount Lu. In his youth he was renowned for his austere discipline. Later he traveled to Guanzhong, studying under Master Rui. Early in the Yuanjia reign period he went to the capital and stayed at Daochang Temple. By nature plain and simple, he ate only one midday meal. He recited the Mahāparinirvāṇa, the Lotus, and the Vimalakīrti. Whenever he chanted in the latter part of the night, the neighboring rooms always heard the sound of weapons and an escort outside Zhuang's door; it was actually heavenly spirits who came to listen. Early in the Daming reign period of the Song, he died at the temple, at the age of seventy-six.
