Shi Puming, whose lay surname was Zhang, was a native of Linzi. He left household life in his youth, was pure and uncorrupted by nature, ate vegetables, wore coarse cloth, and took repentance and recitation as his practice. He recited the two sūtras, the Lotus and the Vimalakīrti. When reciting them, he had separate robes and a separate seat, never allowing any defilement or impurity. Whenever he recited up to the chapter "Encouragement [of Bodhisattva Samantabhadra]," he would always see Samantabhadra riding an elephant, standing before him. Reciting the Vimalakīrti-sūtra, he would also hear heavenly music in the air. Furthermore, he was skilled in divine dhāraṇīs, and all whom he treated were healed. The wife of his fellow townsman Wang Daozhen fell ill, and invited Puming to chant spells. When Puming entered the gate, the woman fainted. Soon a creature like a leopard cat, several feet long, was seen emerging from the doghole, and she was cured as a result. Puming once walked past a shrine by the water, and the spirit medium said, "When the spirits saw him, they all fled." He died during the Xiaojian reign period of the Song, at the age of eighty-five.
