Śramaṇa Huijing was a man of Nanhai. In his youth, he traveled to study in Jing and Chu, and was also broadly versed in the sūtras and treatises; yet he constantly took meritorious deeds as his chief endeavor, so that his doctrinal studies did not reach full completion. Wherever he went, he raised stūpas and images, helping to accomplish various communal tasks. Later he returned to his home region, and again repaired various temples such as Yunfeng and Yong'an. Since Jing was meticulous in his monastic restraints and his resolve and conduct were strict and clear, monks and nuns beyond the Nanling Mountains all turned to him for consultation and instruction. Later, he was appointed monastic director by imperial decree, and his guidance and leadership were effective. Jing had a male servant and a śrāmaṇera who were suddenly beaten by ghosts; afterwards, the mountain spirits manifested in visible form and visited Jing, fully apologizing for their offense, saying, "Our subordinates were ignorant and rashly harassed the master's retinue." Before long, all recovered. Whenever he undertook meritorious deeds, he always dedicated the merit toward the Western realm. On the day of his death, an extraordinary fragrance filled his chamber, only ceasing after a long time.
