Śramaṇa Faxian was a man of Guangzhou. At first he resided at the Northern Temple, which had grown dilapidated over many years; Xian led and converted those with karmic ties to repair and renovate it, renaming it Yanxiang Temple. Later, he entered Mount Cangwei and founded a temple. After the temple was completed, two youths came hand in hand and sang: "Cangwei possesses virtue and the Way; / Joy and happiness are only just beginning." When the words ended, they vanished in an instant. The entire monastery was astonished and sighed in admiration, all marveling at the spiritual wonder. Later, while Xian was engaged in dhyāna, he suddenly saw a person come and say, "The cord of the chime stone is about to break; why not mend it?" Startled, Xian got up and went to look; it was just about to fall to the ground, but because he caught it with his hand, it was not broken or damaged. From the time he left home, he constantly encouraged and converted others to perform meritorious deeds, yet his mind was devoted to dhyāna and the precepts, never falling short in his discipline. It is not known where he finally ended his days.
