Shi Daohui, surnamed Zhang, was a man from Chaisang in Xunyang. He left home at the age of twenty-four and resided at Lushan Temple. His conduct was consistently pure and upright, and he was broadly versed in the scriptures. Uniquely endowed with a natural voice, he had a special fondness for cantillating sūtras. When raising his voice, it contained unusual qualities, following no fixed rules, dividing sections and parsing phrases with exquisite clarity. Later, he came to the capital and resided at Anle Temple; his fame for cantillation flourished greatly in the imperial city. In his later years, he moved to Zhulin Temple in Zhufang, reciting tens of thousands of words of sūtras. Every evening when he chanted, the sound of snapping fingers and chanting 'Sādhu' would be heard in the dark. He died in the second year of the Daming era of the Song at the age of fifty-one.
