Śramaṇa Zhitong, whose secular surname was Zhou, was a native of Jiankang. Having left home, he resided at Xie Temple. He was erudite and broadly learned, especially excelling in scripture recitation (zhuandu). His voice was exceptionally clear and refreshing. During the long nights of the eight-commandment fast (aṣṭāṅga-poṣadha), after midnight when the fourfold assembly drooped and the serpents of sleep came upon them all, Zhitong would ascend the seat and utter a single turn of chant: the brahma-sound pierced the clouds, and there was none whose spirit was not invigorated and whose body was not relieved, suddenly waking to alertness. He died in the third year of Daming [459 CE] at the age of thirty-one.
