Śramaṇa Tanzhi, whose secular surname was Wang, was a native of Jiankang. Having left home, he resided at Dong'an Temple. He was by nature refined and graceful, skilled in his comportment. He could converse on Zhuangzi and Laozi, and broadly surveyed sūtras, treatises, histories, and documents. Blessed with a high and resonant voice, he was exceedingly fond of scripture recitation. Though he modelled himself on earlier masters, he stood out uniquely with fresh novelty. His high tones were limpid and penetrating, and his melismatic transitions were more than ample. Emperor Xiaowu of Song, Xiao Sihua, Wang Sengqian, and others all deeply valued and respected him. When Sengqian presided over Xiangzhou, he brought Tanzhi with him. When Xiao governed Wu, he again invited him to join. Tanzhi died in the state of Wu in the fifth year of Yongming of the Qi [487 CE] at the age of seventy-nine.
