Shi Tanguang was a native of Kuaiji. Following his master, he stayed at the Changsha Temple in Jiangling. He naturally took pleasure in the Five Classics, poetry, rhapsodies, mathematics, and divination, mastering all of them without exception. Approaching the age of thirty, he sighed with emotion and said: 'All I have studied hitherto are worldly affairs. I have not been tinged by a hairsbreadth of the profound principles of the Buddhadharma; how can this be suitable for someone whose hair has been shaven?' He then cast aside his former occupations and listened to the various sūtras and treatises. His understanding surpassed that of others; hearing a thing once, he immediately grasped it.
