Prince Wen of Hengyang of the Song, [Liu] Yiji, was stationed in Jingzhou and sought a śramaṇa versed in principles to discuss the Buddhadharma with him. Local opinion recommended Tanguang as fit for this great responsibility. Tanguang firmly declined, but the Prince personally went to his room to earnestly invite him, so he complied with the command. He was provided with carriages, clothing, and laborers, and a monthly allowance of ten thousand [cash]. Whenever a fast gathering was held, there was no chant leader. The Prince said to Tanguang: 'Guiding all living beings is the very foundation of virtue. How can the Venerable One decline? Please make an effort yourself.' Tanguang then changed his mind, practiced chanting, and composed texts of repentance. Whenever he held the incense burner before the assembly, both monastics and laity looked up to him in reverence.
