Guṇavṛddhi, translated as Anjin ("Peaceful Progress"), was originally a man of Madhyadeśa. In his youth, he took up the Way and served as master the Tianzhu Mahāyāna master Saṃghasīha. He was intelligent and had a powerful memory; he was diligent in chanting and had mastered nearly two hundred thousand words of both Mahāyāna and Hīnayāna texts. He also studied non-Buddhist classics, clearly understood yin and yang, and his predictions of the seasons and verification of events were proven correct on many occasions. At the beginning of the Jianyuan reign of the Qi, he came to the capital and stayed at Vaiśālī Temple. Holding a khakkhara and followed by disciples, his deportment was solemn and dignified; princes, dukes, and noble persons took turns inviting him to receive offerings.
