At that time, there was also the śramaṇa Baoyi, in Sanskrit Anamati, originally surnamed Kang, a man of Kangju whose family had lived in Tianzhu for generations. During the Xiaojian reign of the Song, he came to reside in the dhyāna quarters of Waguan Temple in the capital. He constantly practiced dhyāna sitting beneath trees in the temple and was versed in the sūtras and vinaya; the people of the time also called him a Tripiṭaka master. He often tossed several hundred cowrie shells and would instantly know good or bad fortune. He was skilled in esoteric dhāraṇīs: by smearing incense onto his palm, he could also see people's past deeds. Emperor Shizu of the Song gave him a bronze spittoon about two feet high, which was constantly placed before his bed. Suddenly someone stole it. Baoyi took a single mat, rolled it up empty, and recited dhāraṇīs over it several times; after three nights, the spittoon was back inside the mat, and no one could fathom how. Thereupon, monastics and laypeople from near and far all revered him as extraordinary. Crown Prince Wenhui and Prince Wenxuan of the Qi, as well as Emperor Taizu of the Liang, all revered him and treated him as their master. In the final years of the Yongming reign, he passed away at his dwelling.
