Zhu Sengfu was a native of Ye. In his youth he maintained the precepts and conduct, adhering to his resolve with chastity and austerity; his learning encompassed the various treatises, and he was also well-versed in the scriptures and laws. His path shook the Yi and Luo rivers, and the entire capital revered him. Encountering the famine and chaos of the Western Jin, Sengfu withdrew to Huoze with Shi Dao'an and others, researching with precision and analytical rigor, penetrating the subtle and profound to the utmost. Later he rested at Shangming Temple in Jingzhou, moderating himself with simple vegetarian food, diligently performing prostrations and repentance, and vowing to be born in Tuṣita to gaze reverently upon Maitreya. At that time, Wang Kang of Langye was regional inspector of Jingzhou; relying on Sengfu's purity and integrity, he invited him to be his precept master, and his entire household revered him. Two days before he died, Sengfu suddenly said: "Tomorrow I shall depart." When the end came, wonderful fragrance filled the room, and sacred sounds continued without cease; monastics and laypeople hurried forth, those coming numbering in the tens of thousands. In the latter part of that day, he passed away without illness, at the age of sixty; he was accordingly buried in the temple, and the monks built a stūpa for him.
