Shi Fayu's origin is unknown. In his youth he was fond of learning and devoted his mind to the ancient classics, but he gave free rein to his impulses and was arrogant and boastful, acting as if no one were beside him. Later, he met Master Dao'an, suddenly became convinced and deferential, and thereupon cast aside his hair-pin to dedicate himself to the Way, serving Dao'an as his master. Having been bathed in the profound transformation, his awakened understanding was extraordinary; he broke his original disposition and formed his virtue through humility. Ruan Bao, the grand administrator of Yiyang, heard of his reputation and admired him, forming a bond of good friendship from afar, exchanging letters of goodwill, and sending gifts to him in succession.
