5.38

後襄陽被寇，遇乃避地東下，止江陵長沙寺，講說眾經，受業者四百餘人。時一僧飲酒，廢夕燒香，遇止罰而不遣。安公遙聞之，以竹筒盛一荊子，手自緘封，題以寄遇，遇開封見杖，即曰：「此由飲酒僧也，我訓領不勤，遠貽憂賜。」即命維那鳴槌集眾，以杖筒置香橙上，行香畢，遇乃起，出眾前，向筒致敬。於是伏地，命維那行杖三下，內杖筒中，垂淚自責。時境內道俗莫不歎息，因之勵業者甚眾。既而與慧遠書曰：「吾人微闇短，不能率眾，和上雖隔在異域，猶遠垂憂念，吾罪深矣。」後卒於江陵，春秋六十矣。

Later, when Xiangyang was attacked by bandits, Yu sought refuge by traveling east and stayed at Changsha Temple in Jiangling, where he lectured on the various scriptures, with more than four hundred people receiving his instruction. At that time, a monk drank alcohol and neglected the evening burning of incense; Yu merely penalized him without expelling him. When Master Dao'an heard of this from afar, he put a bramble rod into a bamboo tube, sealed it with his own hand, addressed it, and sent it to Yu. When Yu opened the seal and saw the rod, he immediately said: "This is on account of the monk who drank alcohol; because my admonition and leadership were not diligent, I have caused my master far away the sorrow of sending this gift." He immediately ordered the karmadāna to strike the mallet and assemble the congregation, placed the tube with the rod on the incense table, and after circumambulating with incense was finished, Yu rose, stepped forward before the assembly, and paid homage to the tube. Thereupon he prostrated himself on the ground and ordered the karmadāna to administer three strokes with the rod. He then placed the rod back into the tube and reproached himself with tears falling. At that time, none of the monastics and laypeople in the region did not sigh in admiration, and because of this, those who exerted themselves in their endeavors were very numerous. Afterwards, he wrote a letter to Huiyuan saying: "My person is petty, benighted, and deficient, unable to guide the assembly. Even though the upādhyāya is separated from me in another land, he still deigns to harbor anxious thoughts from afar; my guilt is deep indeed." Later, he died in Jiangling at the age of sixty.
