Shi Daoli's origin is unknown. He left the household in his youth and served Master Dao'an as his teacher, excelling in the Fangguang jing. Furthermore, considering that the Three Mysteries of Zhuangzi and Laozi faintly corresponded to Buddhist principles, he also devoted considerable attention to them. His nature was clear and tranquil, and he did not involve himself in the contemporary world. Later, he accompanied Dao'an into Guanzhong and lived in seclusion at Mount Fuzhou, dwelling alone in a cave and accepting no offerings. Whenever he plunged his thoughts into dhyāna, he would not arise for seven days; this happened several times. Later, at the beginning of summer, he suddenly emerged from the mountain, gathered the monks together, and personally lectured on the Dapin for them. Someone asked him the reason, and he answered: "I can only last until autumn, so I wish roughly to complete what I have held in my mind." A few days after the pravāraṇā, he indeed died without illness; people of the time considered him one who knew his destined span.
