Shi Tanjie, also named Huijing, had the secular surname Zhuo and was a native of Nanyang; he was the younger brother of Qian, the magistrate of Jiyang in the Ministry of External Military Affairs under the Jin dynasty. Living in poverty, he applied himself to study, turning his mind to the classical writings. Later, hearing Yu Fadao lecture on the Fangguang jing, he borrowed robes to attend the lecture once. Thereupon he deeply awakened to Buddhist principles, abandoned the secular world to follow the Way, and submissively served Master Dao'an as his teacher. He was widely versed in the Tripiṭaka, recited more than five hundred thousand words of scriptures, and bowed five hundred times to the Buddha every day; the Jin Prince of Linchuan held him in high esteem. Later, falling gravely ill, he constantly recited the name of Maitreya Buddha without ceasing. His disciple Zhisheng attended him in his illness and asked why he did not vow to be reborn in the Land of Peace and Nurture (Sukhāvatī). Jie said: "I, together with eight others including the upādhyāya, made a joint vow to be reborn in Tuṣita. The upādhyāya, Daoyuan, and others have all already attained rebirth there; I have not yet been able to go, and that is why I have this vow." When he finished speaking, a light shone upon his body, his countenance became even more joyful, and he suddenly passed away at the age of seventy; he was buried to the right of Master Dao'an's tomb.
