Zhu Daoyi, surnamed Lu, was a man of Wu. He entered the monastic life at a young age, was upright and devoted to his studies, yet he concealed his traces and hid his wisdom so that no one could recognize it; only after dwelling with him for a long time did one realize his transcendent spirit. The brothers Wang Xun of Langya treated him with deep respect. During the Taihe era of the Jin, he went out to the capital and stayed at Waguan Temple, studying under Master Tai. Within a few years, his insight penetrated profound depths, and his lectures moved the whole capital. Tai had a disciple named Tanyi, who also possessed elegant conduct; the people of the time called Tanyi 'Dayi' and Daoyi 'Xiaoyi'. Their renown and virtue continued in succession, held in high esteem by contemporary opinion, and Emperor Jianwen of the Jin deeply respected and valued him.
