宋大將軍彭城王義康請以為師，再三迺許。王請入第受戒，叡曰：「禮聞來學，不聞往教。」康大以為愧，迺入寺虔禮，祇奉戒法，後以貂裘奉叡。叡不著，常坐之。王密令左右求買，酬三十萬。叡曰：「雖非所服，既大王所施，聊為從用耳。」

The Generalissimo and Prince of Pengcheng of the Song, [Liu] Yikang, invited him to be his master, and only after three requests did he agree. The Prince invited him to enter his residence to confer the precepts, but Rui said: "According to the rites, one hears of students coming to learn; one does not hear of the teacher going thither to instruct." Yikang was deeply ashamed, so he went to the temple to pay reverent homage and respectfully received the rules of the precepts. Later, he offered Rui a sable robe. Rui did not wear it, but regularly sat upon it. The Prince secretly ordered his attendants to seek to purchase it, offering three hundred thousand [coins]. Rui said: "Although it is not something I wear, since it was given by the Great Prince, I simply make use of it accordingly."
